Jindabyne Sun 21st Oct ‘07 From Todd Vercoe:
The day dawned bright, sunny and hot as about 20 of us met up at Williamsdale before heading South. The MRA attempted to upstage us by also using the Williamsdale Servo as the start point for their trip to the South Coast. Trevor attempted to hijack the ride, trying to convince us to join our affiliates in MRA for their trip. Peter arrived and would haver none of it - we were Snowies -bound and that was that, although the previously advertised location of Buckenderra had been modifiedd, on the grounds that 'there is nothing at Buckenderra'. Apparently nobody has the technology to change the website!
So off we headed. A cafe in Cooma provided a great mornos and then we were off towards Berridale. Great, windy roads with high speed sweepers, and unbelievable panoramic views of the Snowies in the far distance. Nearly one moment of geographic embarrassment as a turnoff was nearly missed, and unfortunately Sean and his Beemer had to return home as the beast wasn't firing as well as it should have been. Jindabyne came into sight and while it was a shock to see the low level of water, the BBQ spot was a beauty and the conversation was plentiful as snags, chops and rissoles slowly cooked.
Hard luck story of the day was from David of Trumpy Triple fame, who rode to the Moto GP (lucky sod!). Unfortunately, come the Monday his disc lock decided that it wasn't going to budge, and he ended up having to get his bike trailered back to Canberra. A little bit of work with an angle grinder and it was all sorted. Bummer.
The trip back also took us to some great sweepy roads via Dalgety and, for Flip and several others, almost via Bombala. Luckily, all were reunited at Cooma where icecreams were a big hit on what was a 30 degrees + day. A safe return trip home, and no sign of Constable Plod. Coffee at Tilley's and then home to think back on a damned good day in the saddle.
Addendum from the RO2 Editor: There was a minor car accident on the final leg of the stretch home involving a single car and a fence. Several of our gallant members pulled over to offer assistance, while others, who will not be named and shamed, kept going. It also appears that we were not the only ones to offer assistance – an off duty police officer also happened to be travelling on that road at just the right time and pulled over to assess the situation. You guessed it; it was our own lovely Lisa, the Cooma cop, who seems to be loitering in the same area as our own St Peter all too often for it to be a coincidence!
