Rider Development 22/11/08
Seven riders, 4 learners and 3 fully licenced, turned up on an overcast morning to hear some words of wisdom about motorcycle riding from riding and safety guru Gary Mac. Firstly thank you Gary for giving up your Saturday for us and for the many instructions, tips, strategies, and words of encouragement. Everyone was able to get a lot out of the session. The setup at EPIC is ideal for those of us who want a little practice at low speed riding. There are a couple of other sites around Canberra set up the same.
It goes without saying that the learner riders benefited from what Gary demonstrated to us by riding the course and by his verbal instructions. And it has to be said that the fully licenced riders also benefited greatly from the day. If you think you know it all and have everything down pat, you’re dreaming, as Darryl would say.
Without exception everyone had something to learn or at the very least we needed some kind and gentle words from Gary to point us in the correct direction. We can all ride on the open road at high speed but we also need to be able to master the low speed riding. Instead of three point turns how about some practice on the u-turns. Instead of finding the easiest place to park we could challenge ourselves and make that hard left or right turn.
No body is perfect and that is to be expected but when we go on a ride we would like to see everyone enjoy themselves and be confident in both high and low speed riding. So come along to a rider development day and make all your riding fun.
