Al's Caloundra Ride

Story provided by Lubo

life guardbike rider

After me missing this ride in the newsletter, and talking to others, I sent it out in an email to make sure all new about it. A number of people commented that it was good to see the email as it reminded them. We might have to make it a regular occurrence.

We met in the usual place at BP Blacksoil with a good number of bikes there. The Pres was there, but wasn’t able to make the ride due to him being rewarded by his footy club for his efforts, on that day. Well done Ado. You should be proud of what you have done. I was witness to some underhanded tactics by the Sheriff. He was actually bribing Jim’s grandson to dob us in, if we did anything wrong on the ride...that is disgraceful. One of the last to arrive was Baz with his new 3 seater trike. A good looking machine and pretty comfy looking too!

Al (Ride Leader) planned to have one stop at Kilcoy and get to Caloundra early so that people could enjoy maximum time up there. We had a smooth and easy ride to Kilcoy, although the traffic was slow going through the twisties at Somerset Dam. The coffee shop/Bakery near Vic’s “Incident spot” serves up a great coffee and some of the pastries etc are very tasty. We had a good get together there enjoyed the beautiful day. We waved to many of the Ulyssians, passing after spending the weekend at the Ulympics.

Soon we were on our way and travelling through the beautiful country around Kilcoy and Woodford. Turning east outside Woodford we wound our way through the twisties and on to Peachester. At this point Al took us on to the Bald Knob road through to Landsborough. There are some beautiful views of the Glasshouse Mts. Some excellent roads through there...a number of times I had to make the decision whether to look at the view or stay on the road. Absolutely magic area.

When we merged back onto the Steve Irwin Way, the traffic was built up. The group stayed together well in amongst it all. The road works at Caloundra are progressing well. Al led us through and headed towards Golden Beach. He found parking spaces enough for the dozen or so bikes, after a bit of to and froing we all park together. I think he must have arranged it because normally you can’t get a parking space along there.

After a bit of discussion we ALL decide to walk to the shops...now this is where I have the advantage of giving the correct version of events, compared to some of the “embellished” stories you may hear. Al decided on where to park, and I indicated that there were shops down the road and we could walk to them. After the first 500 meters the “older” members indicated that they were starting to hurt because of the distance. Me, being the younger member of the group, tried to encourage the older members to keep going. They even tried to hijack a bus to take them the rest of the way. Kath went one further and made herself welcome on a 4 seater bike that was passing by. She developed the royal wave as she passed all the members walking. Most of us walked all the way whilst some of the others decided to return and ride their machines down to the shops.....Where’s the adventure????? It wasn’t that far...only 2.2 km round trip!!!!!

We enjoyed a beautiful seafood lunch and waddled away very happy. Kath and I decided to talk a walk along the beach as we headed back. The water was a beautiful green and there were a lot of people out enjoying the fantastic weather. We run into a fellow rider along the way who had just returned from a huge long ride throughout Australia.

Eventually we all return to the bikes and discuss who’s doing what. Many decided to do their own thing. Kath and I decided to head off and visit family. We headed into Caloundra and did a ride through checking the beaches and around the place. We then headed out of Caloundra. As we got to the highway we could see a few of our group heading home. Eventually we caught them and followed. I had decided to travel back the way we had come to enjoy those views again. The group turned off ahead of us so we continued on. I actually took the wrong turn at one stage and found more gorgeous areas before getting back onto the road. We stopped at Kath’s family’s place and apparently we had missed the others by 5 minutes, so I think I will be using that road a bit more in the future.

We had a great day and enjoyed the company of all that went along. Many thanks to Al for the ride and expert leadership.

Cheers, Lubo

Motorcycles In The Media

Can-Am Spyder no motorcycle

Is it a motorcycle, is it a convertible, is it a trike, or is it some sort of mechanical stick insect?

It's none of these; it's the three-wheeler Can-Am Spyder and, for the moment, you need a full motorcycle licence to ride the $25,990 vehicle. But that could change.

Still easy riding in Townsville

AMONG Ulysses club members, Stephen Dearnly is numero uno.

The man known to fellow club members as Ol' No. 1 is the founder of the club that's celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

The sprightly 85-year-old was still riding less than two years ago and still loves to get on the back of a motorcycle.

Scooters 'safer than bikes'

CYCLISTS would be safer if they rode 50cc mopeds, according to an organiser of a petition against Queensland Government changes to rider licensing laws.

The Parliamentary Travelsafe committee has recommended that moped riders who currently ride on an open car licence be required to obtain an automatic motorcycle licence.

Riders told beware, take care, survive

MOTORCYCLISTS will be hit with graphic images as part of a State Government campaign to curb the rising road toll.

A radio campaign began yesterday and billboard advertising will be erected at crash hot spots next month.

Grey power boosts bikers

WHEN John Travolta tied on his black bandanna, slipped on his dark sunglasses and straddled his motorbike for a road trip across the US, his desire for "freedom" resonated with baby boomers the world over.

In fact, the grey-power biker movement is so strong it even has its own club, with an appropriate motto "Grow Old Disgracefully".

Cross Border Motorcycle Blitz

POLICE on both sides of the border have been heartened by a successful operation aimed at lowering the motorbike road toll in southeast Queensland and northern NSW.

As part of Operation High Side -- an ongoing cross-border patrol effort shared between Gold Coast and Tweed-Byron police -- officers yesterday set up camp on the border at Nerang-Murwillumbah Road, at Numinbah.

Stoner endorses rider gear

WORLD champion motorcycle racer Casey Stoner has called for laws to require riders to wear more protective equipment than just a helmet.

The Young Australian of the Year who started the season with a win this month said he had seen "first hand" the benefits of comprehensive safety clothing.
