Australian Motorcycle Museum Haigslea 24 February 2008

Report & photos submitted by Ashley (Loan A Ranger)
Additional photos submitted by Rat & Thursty

The wet weather seemingly behind us for a short time at least, the day dawned fine and hot. A fair turnout of bikes arrived at BP Blacksoil for the ride to the bike museum, to be led by Ashley (Loan A Ranger) and Tess (Sparky). A good rollup was evident, and at 8.05 we all left. We took the Brisbane Valley Highway through Fernvale, before heading up through Spityard Creek and out towards Somerset Dam. The recent rains had improved the level of water in Wivenhoe noticeably, and the fields through which we were riding were a lot greener than the last time we all passed this way as a group. We proceeded right along to the T intersection near Somerset, and turned left to head back into Esk where we were meeting Lloyd, Margaret and Pamela.

A 15 minute break in Esk gave everyone time for a chin wag, before we saddled up and rode back toward Fernvale. A turn at Coominya Connection Rd saw us bowling through more woody farmland, and a left turn in Lowood saw us climbing up the steep switchback through Glamorganvale and on toward Marburg. At Marburg, we turned onto the Warrego Highway for a short jaunt to Haigslea, and the bike museum. We arrived at a little after 10.30 to be greeted by Wazza. who welcomed everyone by firing up the Chev V8 engined "Boss Hoss" bike which had been wheeled out to the museum forecourt. Max immediately dropped to his knees and began worshipping the God of Speed, and all present were suitably impressed by this awesome bike.

Much more greeted the group inside, with 180 bikes of all descriptions, make and vintage. There were bikes for all tastes, from streamliners and racers to trials bikes to road going sporties, as well as some very rare Japanese and British machinery. A leisurely barbecue lunch was put on by the museum for the group, and everyone spent a relaxed time eating and socialising after the vsit through the museum. At around 12.30 people began to trickle away, until by 1 pm the last of our group mounted their trusty iron horse and headed for home.

A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all, and a huge thank you to Wazza and the staff at the museum for showing our group such a great time.

Motorcycles In The Media

Can-Am Spyder no motorcycle

Is it a motorcycle, is it a convertible, is it a trike, or is it some sort of mechanical stick insect?

It's none of these; it's the three-wheeler Can-Am Spyder and, for the moment, you need a full motorcycle licence to ride the $25,990 vehicle. But that could change.

Still easy riding in Townsville

AMONG Ulysses club members, Stephen Dearnly is numero uno.

The man known to fellow club members as Ol' No. 1 is the founder of the club that's celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

The sprightly 85-year-old was still riding less than two years ago and still loves to get on the back of a motorcycle.

Scooters 'safer than bikes'

CYCLISTS would be safer if they rode 50cc mopeds, according to an organiser of a petition against Queensland Government changes to rider licensing laws.

The Parliamentary Travelsafe committee has recommended that moped riders who currently ride on an open car licence be required to obtain an automatic motorcycle licence.

Riders told beware, take care, survive

MOTORCYCLISTS will be hit with graphic images as part of a State Government campaign to curb the rising road toll.

A radio campaign began yesterday and billboard advertising will be erected at crash hot spots next month.

Grey power boosts bikers

WHEN John Travolta tied on his black bandanna, slipped on his dark sunglasses and straddled his motorbike for a road trip across the US, his desire for "freedom" resonated with baby boomers the world over.

In fact, the grey-power biker movement is so strong it even has its own club, with an appropriate motto "Grow Old Disgracefully".

Cross Border Motorcycle Blitz

POLICE on both sides of the border have been heartened by a successful operation aimed at lowering the motorbike road toll in southeast Queensland and northern NSW.

As part of Operation High Side -- an ongoing cross-border patrol effort shared between Gold Coast and Tweed-Byron police -- officers yesterday set up camp on the border at Nerang-Murwillumbah Road, at Numinbah.

Stoner endorses rider gear

WORLD champion motorcycle racer Casey Stoner has called for laws to require riders to wear more protective equipment than just a helmet.

The Young Australian of the Year who started the season with a win this month said he had seen "first hand" the benefits of comprehensive safety clothing.
