Christmas Lights Tour - 2008

  20 December 2008

Photos and report Submitted by Patti

Christmas Lights Ride

About 30 bikes and one bright yellow trike turned up for the ride. What a great sight. I think all the bikes had some tinsel or lights or glow sticks on them. It really looked spectacular as we rode off.

Cheffie led the ride and we saw some really beautifully decorated homes. Some people go to so much trouble and expense that it would be a shame for us not to take a look and appreciate all they have done.

We stopped at one house in Bundamba and soon after we arrived, so did the Sapar truck, playing Christmas carols. It was covered in lights and parked right in the middle of the street. Santa jumped out and had lollies for everyone. It was quite a sight. Thanks Cheffie for timing the ride so perfectly that we arrived there at the same time.

The trike was tail end Charlie and everyone took turns corner marking and it was all going smoothly,,,, until we hit Paul Tully Drive. How did it all go so wrong there? We came out the end of the drive and corner marked. The rule was, that you corner marked until you saw the trike, then you rejoin the ride. We waited and waited - no trike. Eventually Adrian came back to tell us that somehow the trike was now in the front of the pack. So we rode on but never saw another rider or corner marker so we decided to go to the next meeting point, Macca’s at Goodna. As we were taking the Goodna exit, I looked over and saw a stream of bikes arriving at Macca’s from the east. We drove down to the lights and while waiting for the red light to change a few from our ride came up behind us. Then about a dozen or so bikes led by Cheffie crossed in front of us, riding in from the west. Doh!! Where did it all go wrong? It was so funny.

We were all looking forward to a coffee at Macca’s, but because their registers weren’t working, they wouldn’t serve anyone. Most of us then decided to head back to where we started, Yamanto. We had a great coffee there and shared some laughs about the night.

Any one who missed the ride should make the effort next year. It’s a fabulous night, riding with all the bikes with their flashing lights on and all the cars tooting and people yelling “Merry Christmas” to us. It’s a great feeling. Thank you again Cheffie. It was heaps of fun.

Motorcycles In The Media

Can-Am Spyder no motorcycle

Is it a motorcycle, is it a convertible, is it a trike, or is it some sort of mechanical stick insect?

It's none of these; it's the three-wheeler Can-Am Spyder and, for the moment, you need a full motorcycle licence to ride the $25,990 vehicle. But that could change.

Still easy riding in Townsville

AMONG Ulysses club members, Stephen Dearnly is numero uno.

The man known to fellow club members as Ol' No. 1 is the founder of the club that's celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

The sprightly 85-year-old was still riding less than two years ago and still loves to get on the back of a motorcycle.

Scooters 'safer than bikes'

CYCLISTS would be safer if they rode 50cc mopeds, according to an organiser of a petition against Queensland Government changes to rider licensing laws.

The Parliamentary Travelsafe committee has recommended that moped riders who currently ride on an open car licence be required to obtain an automatic motorcycle licence.

Riders told beware, take care, survive

MOTORCYCLISTS will be hit with graphic images as part of a State Government campaign to curb the rising road toll.

A radio campaign began yesterday and billboard advertising will be erected at crash hot spots next month.

Grey power boosts bikers

WHEN John Travolta tied on his black bandanna, slipped on his dark sunglasses and straddled his motorbike for a road trip across the US, his desire for "freedom" resonated with baby boomers the world over.

In fact, the grey-power biker movement is so strong it even has its own club, with an appropriate motto "Grow Old Disgracefully".

Cross Border Motorcycle Blitz

POLICE on both sides of the border have been heartened by a successful operation aimed at lowering the motorbike road toll in southeast Queensland and northern NSW.

As part of Operation High Side -- an ongoing cross-border patrol effort shared between Gold Coast and Tweed-Byron police -- officers yesterday set up camp on the border at Nerang-Murwillumbah Road, at Numinbah.

Stoner endorses rider gear

WORLD champion motorcycle racer Casey Stoner has called for laws to require riders to wear more protective equipment than just a helmet.

The Young Australian of the Year who started the season with a win this month said he had seen "first hand" the benefits of comprehensive safety clothing.
