Thunder Rolls Rally 2009

Report and photos by Pinkie

Thunder Rolls Rally 2009 – Millmerran.

Anyway we decided to go to the Thunder Rolls Rally this year at Millmerran on the Gore Highway, really not far at all basically a three hour leisurely ride. Started out on Friday, sun shining and it looked like it would be a great day. But after climbing into Toowoomba the temperature dropped dramatically and the wind was blustery. On came the jackets to keep warm. The ride itself from this point on was a fight against the wind as conditions became very windy.

We arrived and commenced to set up camp. That was an adventure in itself with the wind to assist. Then we settled in for a not so comfortable evening and night. It developed into an interesting episode as we caught up with quite a number of people we see only occasionally such as Mal who can talk the legs off a table. But the conversation was very interesting as he had just returned from a trip across the Nullarbor. He was booked for 109 km/h in a 110 km/h zone. Sounds strange doesn’t it, but he was towing a trailer and there is a speed limit of 100 km/h in Western Australia for all vehicles towing a trailer of any description.

Here is a photo of some of the people we met up with over the weekend and yes they are all trikers. Saturday afternoon was also the Show and Shine. So we decide to put our trikes in for judging and guess who won. You got it, Pinkie. But ask her about the blue pair of men’s shorts size large that she won. The Saturday nights entertainment was provided by good friends of our Duffy & Zac known as JESTA. Who played many rock and roll songs from the 70’s through to the 90’s. Anyway I enjoyed the music.

Unfortunately Sunday morning came round all too quickly and we had to pack up and make our way home. We made our way back to Toowoomba beautiful riding in the Darling Downs in the morning bright and crisp not much traffic could not be better and not a policeman in sight. So we decided to refuel at Withcott and run into some members out for a breakfast ride.

All in all another great weekend away. It is a small rally so if you want a relaxing weekend with no pressures think about coming along next year.

Motorcycles In The Media

Can-Am Spyder no motorcycle

Is it a motorcycle, is it a convertible, is it a trike, or is it some sort of mechanical stick insect?

It's none of these; it's the three-wheeler Can-Am Spyder and, for the moment, you need a full motorcycle licence to ride the $25,990 vehicle. But that could change.

Still easy riding in Townsville

AMONG Ulysses club members, Stephen Dearnly is numero uno.

The man known to fellow club members as Ol' No. 1 is the founder of the club that's celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

The sprightly 85-year-old was still riding less than two years ago and still loves to get on the back of a motorcycle.

Scooters 'safer than bikes'

CYCLISTS would be safer if they rode 50cc mopeds, according to an organiser of a petition against Queensland Government changes to rider licensing laws.

The Parliamentary Travelsafe committee has recommended that moped riders who currently ride on an open car licence be required to obtain an automatic motorcycle licence.

Riders told beware, take care, survive

MOTORCYCLISTS will be hit with graphic images as part of a State Government campaign to curb the rising road toll.

A radio campaign began yesterday and billboard advertising will be erected at crash hot spots next month.

Grey power boosts bikers

WHEN John Travolta tied on his black bandanna, slipped on his dark sunglasses and straddled his motorbike for a road trip across the US, his desire for "freedom" resonated with baby boomers the world over.

In fact, the grey-power biker movement is so strong it even has its own club, with an appropriate motto "Grow Old Disgracefully".

Cross Border Motorcycle Blitz

POLICE on both sides of the border have been heartened by a successful operation aimed at lowering the motorbike road toll in southeast Queensland and northern NSW.

As part of Operation High Side -- an ongoing cross-border patrol effort shared between Gold Coast and Tweed-Byron police -- officers yesterday set up camp on the border at Nerang-Murwillumbah Road, at Numinbah.

Stoner endorses rider gear

WORLD champion motorcycle racer Casey Stoner has called for laws to require riders to wear more protective equipment than just a helmet.

The Young Australian of the Year who started the season with a win this month said he had seen "first hand" the benefits of comprehensive safety clothing.
