Penrith 2009 AGM

Report by Tony (Spook)

AGM. Penrith 2009 ( Tony and Diane Deeves )

Just a few thoughts and thank you from Tony and Di (Spook and Wendy) on our first AGM. Or as Di keeps on saying “ Fan Bloody Tastic”

Firstly, many, many months ago now, Black Betty organised and booked accommodation for quite a few of us, both at Penrith for the week and the trip both ways. Thanks Betty.
Di would like to thank Princess Patti, Christine (Dolly), and Deb (Graverobber) for being her flying buddies on her first flight going down to Sydney. That might have been enough as she travelled home on the bike with me.

We left Macca’s Yamanto at about 5.45am, 20 people on 14 bikes and 1 trike, Penrith bound. To our surprise, Lubo and Kathy turned up to ride the first couple of hundred klms with us, then planned to turn and ride home again. Bloody? Hey Lube.
My first big ride on the new 1300 Honda and Towing the Bandicoot loaded to the hilt had me a little concerned about fuel stops. But no need to worry, Betty and Gary had the trip agenda that covered fuel, food, and rest stops. Thanks once again Betty and Gary.

After our goodbyes to Lubo and Kathy, we head out for Tamworth, our overnight stop. Apart from some heavy rain, the riding was great and we made good time. A couple of sherbets and half a dozen pizza’s and we hit the bunks. Three cabins between us. We will skip over the sleeping arrangements but just to say Kon (Howza), really had a challenge with the short bunks. Hooch slept through the night with his disc alarm constantly going off adding to the noise of the storm and the wind that travelled over Tamworth over night. Good one Hooch.

Early to rise, we hit the road and knocked over about 70 klms before stopping for breakfast. A little damp and a little cool but still good riding. With warm bellies and renewed vigour, we hit the road for the dash to Sydney. We could almost smell it from here, unfortunately we were wrong, as it was only Gloria’s bike burning oil.

Down the putty, and onto Penrith the group became groups, so after some quick phone calls and we found our digs for the night.

That afternoon was spent pitching tents for some of us, while others enjoyed the comforts of units with TV, air con, and those other yummy things. Happy Larry, Kon and myself picked up our ladies from the train at Emu Plains about 2.30 pm.
It’s only been a couple of days I know but it’s still good to see my lady again.

I could fill this news item with the week’s experiences but lets just say, from the trip down, the registration, all the new bikes and products, Friday and Saturday nights dinners. The entertainment, the Nepean Belle paddle wheeler lunch cruise and the enormous parade ride. The ride home with friends with my lady behind me, the entire AGM experience with our friends, thank you for a memorable 10 days.

There were a couple of mishaps for some during the 10 days and that’s life and life is what happens to you while you’re making plans for the future. That’s what we’re doing now, planning our next AGM, please join us.

Motorcycles In The Media

Can-Am Spyder no motorcycle

Is it a motorcycle, is it a convertible, is it a trike, or is it some sort of mechanical stick insect?

It's none of these; it's the three-wheeler Can-Am Spyder and, for the moment, you need a full motorcycle licence to ride the $25,990 vehicle. But that could change.

Still easy riding in Townsville

AMONG Ulysses club members, Stephen Dearnly is numero uno.

The man known to fellow club members as Ol' No. 1 is the founder of the club that's celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

The sprightly 85-year-old was still riding less than two years ago and still loves to get on the back of a motorcycle.

Scooters 'safer than bikes'

CYCLISTS would be safer if they rode 50cc mopeds, according to an organiser of a petition against Queensland Government changes to rider licensing laws.

The Parliamentary Travelsafe committee has recommended that moped riders who currently ride on an open car licence be required to obtain an automatic motorcycle licence.

Riders told beware, take care, survive

MOTORCYCLISTS will be hit with graphic images as part of a State Government campaign to curb the rising road toll.

A radio campaign began yesterday and billboard advertising will be erected at crash hot spots next month.

Grey power boosts bikers

WHEN John Travolta tied on his black bandanna, slipped on his dark sunglasses and straddled his motorbike for a road trip across the US, his desire for "freedom" resonated with baby boomers the world over.

In fact, the grey-power biker movement is so strong it even has its own club, with an appropriate motto "Grow Old Disgracefully".

Cross Border Motorcycle Blitz

POLICE on both sides of the border have been heartened by a successful operation aimed at lowering the motorbike road toll in southeast Queensland and northern NSW.

As part of Operation High Side -- an ongoing cross-border patrol effort shared between Gold Coast and Tweed-Byron police -- officers yesterday set up camp on the border at Nerang-Murwillumbah Road, at Numinbah.

Stoner endorses rider gear

WORLD champion motorcycle racer Casey Stoner has called for laws to require riders to wear more protective equipment than just a helmet.

The Young Australian of the Year who started the season with a win this month said he had seen "first hand" the benefits of comprehensive safety clothing.
