Ride Information

Routes

It is our intention to take the vast majority of rides away from heavy traffic, out of suburbia and into the back-blocks of the Brisbane area and the rest of South East Queensland and some interstate trips. If there is a quick way of getting somewhere, rest assured that we'll find an alternative. You'll see roads that you'd forgotten about years ago and many you never knew existed. We hope you'll also have a lot of fun doing it. We combine the rides with breakfast, lunch or dinner and sometimes all three.

What should I take

  • Money. Useful stuff, money. It buys food and petrol and good things like that.
  • Wet weather gear. If you take it, you won't need it of course, but take it anyway. Note too that we have often started a ride in rain and then had a glorious day, so don't be put off by a little moisture.
  • Mobile phone. Not that it will be of any use, because you'll be out of transmitter range when you need it. Take it anyway.
  • Puncture repair kit and basic tools. Checking your bike before each ride is also a good way to ensure that the tools won't be needed. Check oil and tyres especially. And fill your tank before you go.
  • Medical stuff. If you suffer headaches, take pain tablets. If you suffer cramp, or low blood sugar or any other ailment that requires medication, take it with you.
  • A good attitude. Most important, this. You have a duty to look after others and them to you, so go with a friendly and helpful attitude.

Ride Conduct

Every ride is planned and directed by a Ride Co-ordinator. He or she will explain the intended path before leaving and will sometimes provide additional information such as a list of intended stops.

Regardless of the good intentions, one of the things that happen on a run is that a group of riders can quickly separate. If we ran on closed roads, with no traffic lights, and with governors to limit us to 60kph, we might (and we mean MIGHT) stay together. Life isn't like that however. We ride different bikes and have differing abilities and attitudes (some have lots of attitude). We have to negotiate traffic lights and other nasties, so it is a fact of life that we'll be separated on the road. We should therefore expect it and manage it.

Within the club we have people who have 30 or 40 years continuous riding experience, some even with racing backgrounds. We also have people returning to bikes after a long break and others with only a few weeks on wheels. We have people in their early forties and others nearly twice that age. We must all respect these differences and be aware that they contribute to separation.

So, how do we manage it? It is everyone's responsibility, to look out for others on a run. The Ride Co-ordinator is not able to manage a large group without this assistance, not without stopping at every turn and ruining the flow of riding. Secondly, accept that some like to ride fast and others not so fast. What we don't want is anyone riding at speeds they are uncomfortable with, putting themselves and others in danger. If the pace is too fast, let them go. No one will disparage you for doing this. It is true that we've had the criticism of riding too fast and also for being too slow - the trouble is it was for the same run! That's how hard it is to meet everyone's needs.

Ride within your own capabilities. Obey the road rules. Enjoy the ride.
