Welcome to the on-line edition of "Deep South". This webletter doesn't replace our hard copy monthly newsletter, but it's where you get your mid-month fix of Mt Lindesay Ulysses branch.

Check out what happened on the weekend, who's been good, who's been bad, links to other interesting sites, photos.

Contributions and suggestions for the Webletter are most welcome. In fact, if no-one sends any in, there's no webletter!

Ride Departure Point

From 29 August, all rides depart from the Coffee Club, Browns Plains Village Square, 18 Commerce Drive Browns Plains. GPS location S27 39 46.0 E153 02 44.4 UBD 240 17F Map

Meeting Place

All Mt Lindesay meetings are held in the function room at the Park Ridge Tavern, Mt Lindesay Highway, Park Ridge. The tavern has recently been renovated and the room is fresh and clean, can seat 100 easily, can be partitioned off completely from the rest of the patrons, has large windows overlooking the carpark so we can watch our bikes, has a PA system and up-to-date data show facilities for presentations, good food.... the pluses go on!

The tavern are doing a $10 menu for us from 6pm, with a choice of 250gm t-bone steak, grilled fish or chicken kiev, with chips and salad or vegetables, and includes tea or coffee. Meals will be served in our meeting room, and all they ask is that when we are finished we stack our empty plates on a table they will set up, so they are not walking through the room while our meeting is on.

Ride Reports

Meringandan 25 July 2010

Where the hell is Meringandan? It was with that thought in my mind as I arrived at the Coffee Club for the ride. Thunder & Storm were ride leaders and Klaus & Pat bring up the rear as Tail End Charlies, not sure of the exact number of bikes but it was a fairly good turn out. First stop was Blacksoil to meet up with Spike who was coming on the ride. For those newer members Spike is a former Mt Lindesay Committee member. Thunder gathered us together and told us that the next stop would be Pine Lands we gathered that he meant Plain Lands as none of us had heard of Pine Lands. We headed towards Toowoomba and after a U turn we back tracked to the Plain Lands Coffee Club for coffee.

After a few laughs about Waynes manbag and Deb leaving her flaps open it was back on the highway, we turned off on to Murphy's Creek road. The temp dropped a bit due to the higher altitude and we were stopped by a traffic controllers who had one lane blocked off as there was some burning off, the smoke was pretty thick in places.

We arrived at Meringandy at a bit after 11. Meringandan comprises of a butcher a pub and not much else. The pub was a nice old place established in 1895. Lunches started at 12 but Thunder suggested we order early which was a good idea as by 12 the place was packed.

The meals were fairly well priced and our jaws dropped when we saw the size of them, I don't think any of us were able to get through theirs as they were massive! We joked that we may need to inflate our tyres a bit more to compensate for the extra weight on the way home.

For the ride home Thunder took us on the New England Highway to Hampton where we turned on to the Hampton Esk rd. This was a really nice stretch of road with good corners and a rain forest feel.

A quick stop at Esk for those that needed a toilet break, it was starting to spit and the clouds were looking pretty black. Next stop was at the Fernvale Bakery but every one was still too full from lunch to eat anything. We said our goodbye's at Fernvale and headed home to try and beat the rain.

Thanks to Thunder and Storm for a very nice day.

Cleveland Markets

With the Weather clearing for a beautiful day, a good group gathered, new faces, old faces and some faces not seen for a while, the usual warm greeting and gibes at each other, a briefing and we then departed from the Coffee Club.

Down the Logan Motorway to turn off at Drews Rd, (well most of us, anyway!!) onto Bryants Road, through roundabouts, traffic lights, all riders back up with main group.  Next set of lights, and the Hunter with its flashing dash light pulled over under instruction from Diesel.  So having its own bank of Roadside mechanics, they proceeded to look for the fault.  Short time after we, were off and riding again, down Redland Bay Rd and into Cleveland.
Members wandered leisurely around the markets, had the usual relaxing coffee and chat, and we departed for the Redland Bay Hotel at 12pm.  Again another relaxing stop, some eating, drinking and chatting involved, sitting out log fencing like lounging lizards we caught some rays.
Good day out, short ride and all off home safe & sound.

Lennox Head (Come Byron Bay)

Today we had a no show from the ride leader.

Chief had suggested fish and chips at Byron Bay.
The destination had been changed from Lennox Heads to Byron Bay.

With the weather a little overcast, but not enough to stop 7 of the bikers who showed up for the ride.
7 Bikes showed for a nice ride to Byron Bay with Two Pots leading the way.

Stopped at BP Chinderah for a quick coffee break and checked out two V8 trikes that stopped as well.

Got to Byron Bay where Kelly and Debbie browsed through the shops while the boys waited outside. (well trained, and patient I must say)
We then had fish and chips for lunch, with the sky turning grey and looking like we decided to then head for home.

We had another coffee stop at BP Coomera where we saw Boz & Shrek.

Was a good ride with thanks to Two Pots for being ride leader.

A Brisk Ride through the Country to Bribie Island for Lunch. 30/05/2010

Another glorious Sunday morning brings us to meet at the Coffee Club for brief directions from Two Pots before heading up to Fernvale on the way to Bribie Island.  The clouds kept it cool in the morning but that just made it more comfortable to wear all our riding gear.

E-Orr from Lockyer Valley met up with us at Fernvale & managed to exchange some friendly banter with the group, especially Boz.    An exciting part of the journey was through Split Yard Creek when Boz, E-Orr & myself gave the throttle a twist & put a bit of pressure on the sides of our tyres through the corners.  A stone from my tyre somehow hit Boz on the middle finger & he took much pride in repeatedly showing it to myself & E-Orr.  We didn't see any boys in blue along this strip, I think they all must have been haunting the gateway motorway.

Everyone caught up at the Somerset - Esk turn-off (& so did the wind) to ride as a group again past the chopped up water of a nearly full Somerset Dam.  So beautiful was the view we slowed down just to soak it in.

A brief stop to chat & stretch our legs at Kilcoy before heading west along the Daguilar Hwy via Caboolture, over the bridge to stop at the Sylvan Beach Pub on Bribie. Lunch for 17 people on 11 bikes after which came a quick play on  the pokies.

Chief did an excellent job at Tail End Charlie duties & made sure there were no problems.  Paul gave Heather the spare seat on the back of his bike for the ride, & later she swapped with Denise to have a turn on the Hyosung.  A really nice looking machine which had  no trouble keeping up with the larger bikes in our pack.

BP Burpengary & coffee at McDonalds was our final destination before farewells were said & the journey home.  Hundreds of bikes were out that Sunday, including a different sort of bike, Spider on his shiny yellow Can-Am Spyder.

I hope to ride that trek again some day with the group. It was allot of fun.

Cheers, Ben.

Nindigully Labour Day Long Weekend 1 - 3 May

The Nindigully Legend

It was with much anticipation that we set off for our ride
12 bikes all geared up and with Twopots by my side
With Duckie as our leader and Copit at the rear
Twopots said something smart but lucky she didn’t hear

First stop Aratula Ian and China were already lost
If you don’t pay close attention unfortunately this is the cost
As luck would have it though they reunited with the pack
All is well that ends well and the ride got back on track

A couple of wee breaks later then it was Goondiwindi for lunch
We ate filled up with petrol and mucked around as a bunch
About 10 minutes before Nindigully we stopped again for a break
It was hard riding to get this far and our bums were beginning to ache

So it was we arrived at Nindigully about 4.30 in the afternoon
Tired and exhausted but all in one piece we were all over the moon
Beds and bunks were allocated and then we met at the bar
We certainly deserved a strong cold drink after riding for so long and so far

Well the saga begins with Jo entertaining us all on Saturday night
And ended on Monday morning with an upset and a fight
In between these shenanigans new nicknames were handed out
Powderpuff, Poofy and Poodle who these are I will not say a word about

Pillowfights and hauntings and the odd game of pool
Snakes and bonfires and some old pole dancing fool
Ghost whisperers, spirit orbs and odd bangings in the night
By the time morning came around I was very glad to see the light

Now time does fly when you’re with your mates and all are having fun
And before we knew it our bags are packed and we were all back on our bums
And as we rode back home across our beautiful sunburnt country
With the wind and the sun and mates by my side I felt at peace and quite carefree

And so the legend of Nindigully must come to a sorry end
And already I’m planning and thinking of more country rides in my head
So thanks to all those bikers that came on this overnighter ride
Truly, I could not find better mates to have ridden by my side.

Natural Arch Ride – 28 March 2010

As always seems to be the case lately the weather forecast was checked and shock horror gasp there were predictions of showers but Twopots and I were not phased in the slightest.  As I had stated rather emphatically that very morning that come rain, hail or snow I was going for a ride because I have not been able to go for a ride for some time due to a slight flesh wound and to be honest I really missed being on the bike and more surprisingly, I really missed hanging out with my biker mates (awww). There was a good turn up of 14 bikes.  Dean took command of this rather motley crew and informed us that our first stop was at Chinderah and that the round trip was 300 km in all.

Off we roared with the day showing lots of promise, the sun was shining, the birds were singing…… and wouldn’t you know it we get about half an hour down the highway and down she comes.  Bugger.  This was not looking good as there appeared out of nowhere lots of ominous looking rain clouds above  and ahead of us.  As luck would have it though, it turned out to be just a wee sprinkle.  However, one biker decided to head off home.

First stop: Chinderah BP.  Some of us fuelled up, some enjoyed a cuppa, and lets just say a lot of bantering was going on and then we were back on the bikes again. Then we stopped at Chillingham to buy some lunch to take to the park with us where we basically had a choice of pies, pies and just for something different, more pies.  We had a bit of a hiccup though because Towbar’s bike had been having a bit of a problem and we lost a few bikers but did manage to eventually re-group.

Off we rode to Bochow Park, lovely winding roads and beautiful scenery, and, again, when we arrived noticed that we were missing a couple of bikers.  There were heaps of picnic tables free so we all settled down and had a bit of relax.  Just as we were about to leave Klaus, Pat and Towbar turned up and it seems that Towbar was still having a few problems with his bike.  A few suggestions were thrown around about what to do but Towbar had organised someone to come and collect him.

It was suggested that we all ride back to Mac and Sheila’s place for a cup of tea and everyone agreed that this was would be a pleasant way to end the ride so we all rode back to Beaudesert and enjoyed Mac and Sheila’s hospitality.

All in all it turned out to be a great day, despite that one pesky little shower, it was perfect riding weather – not too hot, not too cold.  As per usual there was good camaraderie between everyone and just a bloody good ride, thanks Dean and ET.

Ride to Bearded Dragon Tavern – March 2010

Sunday morning arrives and we get ready for the ride only to go out to my garage and my trike didn't want to start and run. I think after 5 week ends straight, of riding with continuous rain it was telling me to bite my bum. We eventually left home and headed to the garage to fill up with a bit of petrol and a lot of metho. No, not for me for the fuel tank. Stefan and I arrived at the Coffee Club at Browns Plains 10 minutes after leave time expecting everybody to have left and we would have to play catch up down the highway., only to arrive and find the usual diehards. Bill (Two Pots) Brian, (two Stoke), Dean and Andrea (ET) there still waiting. With Stefan and myself that made 6. WOW........ We decided to get a cup of coffee and chat as guess what ...... It started to rain. AGAIN. We were sitting there chatting and a old fellow Mt Lindsay person rolled up. I don't know if many of you know Boris but he was the original founder of Mt Lindsay I believe. I only know him from all the rallies that we have been to and he always rolled up with a camper van loaded to the max and a big black wig. He was very well known at the rallies. Boris has been sick for a little while now as he has been having chemo We all sat around and had a great chat, others just admired the scenery. We decided as there was sunshine, we would head off to Mt Tambourine markets then head back to the Beared Dragon for lunch. We all ( the whole 6 of us ) headed off down Browns Plains Rd and got as far as Waterford and down the rain come again and stayed with us then for most of the journey. We got up to Tambourine and pulled over at a coffee shop but once we got out of the pouring rain we realised they were closed for the day as they were attending a Christening . We stood perched under the little bit of awning that was there trying to keep out of the rain. We eventually decided we may as well go to the Bearded Dragon Pub and sit under shelter then wait there and hope for a break in the rain. So off we went again back down the mountain very slowly might I add as the road was slippery. We arrived at the Bearded Dragon and went to find table nicely our of the rain and under the verandah and guess what they were all reserved. Some party of 100 who were at a Christening were coming back there for lunch at 12.30. Wonder if it was the same one. Its gotta be. We finally found a table and it turns out later on to be the best one as they had a guy by the name of Joe Daniels playing in the afternoon and we were in the front row. Yeeeaaaaa.... He was great. He does Elvis beautifully. Spanner and his lovely wife rolled up, along with Kelly not long after we arrived. Mind you they were sensible they at least came in their cars. All in all a good afternoon, food a little bit to desire, way too expensive, but the company and entertainment was great. We left there and headed home and guess what it hasn't rained a drop since I got home. Bugger....

Opening of Ma's Market for Bravehearts – 27 February 2010

The opening of the Ma's Market for Bravehearts went off without a hitch. Klinger and the girls set up the BBQ trailer just in time to beat the rain. A shame about the rain, because it kept a few members away. All the bikes looked brilliant, as usual attracting a fantastic lot of attention from shoppers and passing traffic. Not only did they have a good turnout of members and the public, the Mayor of Logan, [Pam Parker] came to cut the opening ribbon, assisted by Hetti Johnson [Bravehearts founder] and Ma. As the ribbon fell to the ground, cheers erupted from everyone present.
Ma presented bouquets to Pam & Hetti who promptly re presented them back to Ma and members in honour of all the work they had done. Pam mentioned in her speech how much she enjoyed attending this kind of event, she told how she felt that the people of Logan city, who work so hard to help others were the backbone of the community. Her love of the Ulysses Club was very evident as she inspected the bikes and questioned members about the various fund raising events we had been doing. Everyone there on the day, noted that Pam was a very approachable and down to earth lady.
Hetti was, as usual, her lovely and very grateful self, her appreciation of Mt Lindesay branch was more than overwhelming, she showed tremendous interest we have done over the past couple of years and proudly pointed out how much it meant to Bravehearts. Pam had a few laughs with Klinger, his hat & fan, she was also very interested in the stories of how members got their nick names, breaking into fits of laughter at each tale. Due to the rain the Drive In event was cancelled, so everyone stayed around catching up on news and a fair deal of shopping all in all, a very successful day.

Ride to Evans Head – 20 February 2010

We met at the Coffee Club, 12 bikes, 1 car, in the car was Hot Lips, Gypsy and Jessie (Klinger’s daughter). The weather was overcast but good until we got to Tugun where we stopped under the bridge until the rain stopped. Off we go again. We stopped at Chinderah BP Petrol Station and met up with Ducky and Coppit and had some breakfast. Now back on the bikes and riding through the countryside of Ballina. What a great view and no, we didn’t get any rain. We got to Ballina and filled up the bikes and had a stretch. Not far to Evans Head now. We arrive at 11.30 am. Checked into the Illawong Hotel. Then we started to have a liquid lunch and more liquids ….. Oscar and Holeproof, Ducky and Coppit brought their bikes and camper trailers and stayed across the road at the caravan park. We had more drinks through the afternoon and later on they had a 3 piece band playing in the hotel. Twopots ended up singing with the band and he was very good. A few of us ended up a little drunk but all was good. By the end of the night we were all off to bed – lovely rooms and one penthouse room which Klinger, Hotlips and Jessie (Cougarlicious!) had. It was so hot in the rooms I slept on the balcony until 3.30 am. Anyway, morning has come around, We all packed up and headed home. Oscar, Holeproof and little Fiona stayed there to have a swim. ‘We had a great time, heaps of photos, thanks Oscar for the weekend away.
