Bear & Ned's Update!

Guess who Loves Mad Max? Greetings from Whyalla. We have arrived safe and sound if not a little sun burnt & tired. Some lovely country has been travelled. Water to the edge of the tar on the way to Broken Hill, We had to ride through water to get to Silverton where this photo was taken The rest of the group are miss behaving & are in the Naughty Corner. ( as can be seen from this photo) Will keep you posted on our progress if you keep us informed as well. (That is when I can get the Computer to work properly) How did the Nambucca Ride go? Nothing heard yet!!!!

MEET TINY TIM THE TRAILER

Age dulls the enthusiasm for adventure and discomfort, both of which seem to accompany minimalist motor cycle touring. So when we started to look at the 2010 AGM in Albany, and possibly camping on route, we accepted that we needed a trailer to carry our gear.

While there are a couple of mono trailers available, we decided to stay conventional and use two wheels. That left us with four options for non camper trailers;

1. An imported trailer,

2. A "Classic" fibreglass trailer,

3. An "Ali Lite" alloy trailer, or

4. A "Bandicoot" alloy trailer.

The imported trailers are the cheapest, (available for under $2000, but probably built in China), and use 12in wheels. They are heavy, around 90Kg, and are better suited to a large cruiser than a small touring bike. The „Classic‟ is a well proven trailer available in a range of sizes, but is heavier than the equivalent size alloy trailer. Of the two alloy trailers available the "Ali Lite" is the better looking with its curved profile, but is more expensive than the „Bandicoot‟. On cost and simplicity the boxy „Bandicoot‟ got the nod. It runs on 8in wheels, Holden hubs, has a steel frame, weighs 60kg empty, and has a GVM of 175Kg. It comes in a range of colour options.

We were tempted to order a red one, to match the Deauville, but then what colour will the next bike be? (Helmets on for a bike story; Those of you with a Christian upbringing will know that in 6 days God made Heaven and Earth and all contained within. On the seventh day he rested and hallowed it. While he was hallowing, Satan sauntered by and called out from behind his hand, "God, what colour will motorcycles be?". Where upon God became agitated and animated. After a few seconds he bellowed; „The bloody things will be black!‟ And so it came to pass. Alas today Gods word is not taken as seriously as it once was and motor cycles can be bought in a kaleidoscope of colours, the purchasers unaware of the satanic symbolism of such silliness. Helmets off). We choose black onyx with a silver lid. Our next bike had better be black.

Following the Dorrigo Xmas party we rode on to Samford near Brisbane to collect our trailer from the guy who builds them. He had ours all ready to go, it takes 10 to 12 weeks to get one built, and we hooked it to the towbar. (Helmets on for another story; I bought our towbar from Classic Trailers as they have a very extensive range, and offer a fitting service. But they do not fit towbars to a Deauville, too much work. So I had to fit it myself and it was a pain. The whole rear end of the bike had to be stripped down to the chassis, the support bars fitted then the bike reassembled. It took me three days! Even the fitting instructions for the Deauville quoted „Degree of difficulty – 9 out of 10. Helmets off). After testing lights and how things operated, we set off for Muswellbrook via the Sunshine Coast. The trailer looked so small we called it „Tiny Tim‟.

So how does it go? Very well! It tracks well, is stable in corners, and apart from having to remember that your rig is now longer and wider that the bike, it does not intrude. The Deauville pulls the trailer without protest but runs a tad warmer, and fuel consumption rose so we got 20km per litre rather than 23km. On steep hills (i.e. Ben Lomond) it is necessary to drop down one or two gears and sit in the power band. On flat road the Deauville and trailer will run at 110kph with ease. 3

The trailer swallowed all the gear we took north on the bike with heaps of room to spare. I did think of buying a slab of beer to weigh it down on the trip back, but in the end settled for our luggage and some shopping we did. When we arrived home and opened the lid, it looked like Tim had a tantrum on the way home and had thrown our gear all around the trailer. Packing things into zip up bags before putting them into the trailer will be the go. Will it do the job for the run to Albany? Tell you after the AGM. Are we happy with it? Yes, - despite the no frills look, it fulfils the intended function.

The Pleasant Pluckas.

KARAOKE KORNER

I don't have much to contribute this month, with the exception that we are still waiting for a select few to reimburse the club the $30.00 per head for the no show at the July meeting/Xmas in July function. Admittedly we are still to get in contact with a couple of members, however some members have been contacted, you members know who you are, and most have been sent reminders, however we are still waiting for the monies to come in. To those members who have already paid I thank you for your promptness, and the realisation that you do not want to see the branch out of pocket. Ned sent me an e-mail which I circulated [via e-mail] about the Aldi supermarket chain, weekly specials, particularly motorcycle accessories. I purchased a G.P.S. for $199.00, which comes with all the necessary brackets fittings etc. to install it to your bike. Max Cherrie, told me it is very similar to a Tom Tom brand, and is loaded with features. So if you are interested you need to be quick, there is an extensive range of products, at very reasonable prices. You can also access the Aldi website to see what is available. From September on the weather will be starting to warm up, so we should be looking at re-commencing our brunch rides, and also once daylight saving starts in October look at a dusk ride to Say the Newcastle foreshore, for a feed, and then return home before dark. Have a think about what and where you would like to go, I know Keith Smith is always looking for ideas for the ride calendar. At our last meeting it was decided that the members data base spreadsheet be sent to members for updating and return, we have only received approximately 12 replies. Also I have had a problem with applying the returns to the data base, it must be my apple computer or something, So could all members that haven't yet sent there updated details please send them to me for inclusion. That's it for this month, stay upright, see you on the road. That's all for this month, until next time stay safe and never skid on your lid.

KARAOKE KORNER

At our monthly meeting held on the 4th of July, we also had a Christmas in July night with an American theme. I would like to pay special mention to Garry and Carole and Brad and Jo, for getting into the spirit of the occasion and getting dressed up. These four people went to extraordinary lengths and expense to get into the spirit of the night. To be honest I felt embarrassed that I did not make any effort to join in the spirit of the theme night, congratulations to those four mentioned above. Unfortunately there were a number of people who put their names down to attend and partake of the Xmas in July dinner, and did not show up.
The total number was 10 and at $30.00 per head this amount to $300.00 that we the branch have to pay to the chefs at the Albion, as they catered for all those who said they would be attending. At the meeting before dining, a motion was passed that those who did not show up after saying they would be there on the night are required to pay the $30.00 per head so that we the branch would not be out of pocket. It was also passed that at all future catered functions a deposit be paid by those who advise they will be attending. The 10 persons in question will be receiving correspondence advising of the motion outlined above, and that they are expected to pay $30.00 to our treasurer Kerry Solman. I received a phone call from Chris Garrod Newcastle Lower Hunter Branch and 2011AGM co-ordinator during the week requesting assistance from our branch, for some of the many positions that will be required to be filled at the 2011 AGM. Chris is particularly looking for experienced people to fill vacancies as directors in Transport, Catering, Logistics etc. For those who are interested and believe they have something to offer, Chris's details are available from the Newcastle Lower Hunter Ulysses web site. Bear in mind that our branch has been volunteered to do the registrations at the 2011 AGM, and that we will also be calling for volunteers to man the registration tables during the AGM week. That's all for this month, until next time stay safe and never skid on your lid.

If you think you might go, book your rooms now or sleep on the ground. No complaints will be listened too!

Sids & Kids update Hi Guys, Plans for the ride are progressing. The ride will still be on the same date, that being the 8th of November. The finish venue has changed from Maitland Park to Speers Point Park, which has far better facilities than Rathmines Park. We look to be having bands again, plus a lot of other supporters for the day. I want to more than double the number of riders this year…. That would be around 140 bikes, I think we can easily manage that just between Ulysses Branches, plus the general bike riding public will be involved as well. The manager of SID n Kids Hunter Region was very impressed with what we did last year…. And everybody was super impressed with how it looked with all the bikes riding in at the venue. Around June, I will be looking for volunteers to help me get support from the bike shops in the area to get us as much help with prizes, donations and displays for the event. ANY help would be appreciated, especially with the organisation of the event. I will forward on any information as it comes to hand.
Thank you. Tony Hernando

KARAOKE KORNER (Presidents Report)

Penrith AGM 2009. On Friday the 20th of March a large contingent of us departed Singleton for the green pastures of Penrith to take part in the 25th Ulysses AGM. We welcomed Barry Thomas wife Karen who came along for her first ride with the club, she was Bear’s pillion down and back and from all reports had a great weekend. Rumour has it that she thought the Ulysses club was for men who ride fast, drink beer, fall down, then go home. I don’t know what Barry has been telling her about club rides, but we hope to see her again. After stopping at Colo Heights for a drink, coffee, and chat, it was back on the trusty steeds and into Penrith, to register and explore. The accommodation was perfect as was the location, everything was within walking distance from the Hotel. After checking in Kerry and I attended the Natcom extra ordinary meeting on Friday at 1:00 p.m. where amongst other things it was announced that Mildura will host the 2012 AGM, the other bidding branch was Lockyer near Ipswich in QLD. Friday afternoon was left up to the individual to decide what they wanted to do, until we met up at 5:00p.m. for the short bus ride to board the Nepean Queen paddle steamer, for a dinner cruise on the Nepean River. Some of us were even fortunate enough to take the helm and have a steer of the vessel, it made an old sailor feel very much at home. ( we nearly took out the bridge) A good night was had by all with plenty of Ulysses Club Upper Hunter Branch Newsletter 2 eating, drinking and dancing, the cruise was well organised and well received by all who went, thanks to Lyn for that. Our theme song “Hey Baby” was well received by those on board, even so that some members from other branches joined us on the dance floor to belt out our song. Annette Solman had a great night joining in the dancing and kicking her heels up, along with everyone else. After the cruise some of us made our way to the main tent where the Ulysses dinner was held, apparently there were some disappointed patrons there due to the fact that they had run out of Black and Gold beer, and wine by 9:00p.m. and the beer queue stretched the length of the marquee. Saturday was an early start as we had to assemble by 8:00a.m. for the parade so we mustered outside our accommodation at 7:00a.m. for the short ride to the assembly point. Everything was well organised even down to the quick service at the canteen for breakfast. The ride even though only 3 K’s long was perfect, Penrith city was holding their markets in the main street there were market stalls the length of the main street, people were everywhere and we were all well received by the general public. Saturday afternoon was a do what you like afternoon, until we met up in the foyer of the Hotel at 5:00p.m. for pre dinner drinks. Garry Knight and I had a game of Aqua golf where we had a longest drive competition, incidentally which I won. [He still owes me a beer] We had dinner at the Panthers club and on completion some went dancing, Colleen and I were sooo tired we just went back to the hotel and were in bed by 9:30p.m. Quite regularly plans are made as to what time we are heading home from weekend rides etc, only to find that most of the group has left at a time earlier than planned. This causes dissension amongst some members, particularly when we have arranged to leave at a certain time and there is no one there. Apologies to Kerry Solman, who showed up at Panther’s at the designated time only to realise that the majority had left at 7:30a.m. Had he known he would have left early with the rest of us. I believe that to avoid this type of embarrassment there should be two departure times, those wishing to leave early leave set a time and stick to it, and the same routine apply to those who wish to leave later. Times be set the night before departure, so you could say the early group leave at 7:30a.m. and the later group leave at 9:00a.m. We only had one mishap the whole weekend, on the way home on Sunday we decided to stop at the Halfway house at Howes Valley. Kerry Moffit dropped her bike in the loose gravel, no damage was done to the bike as it landed on Kerry’s leg, which suffered bruising, and a badly sprained ankle. Hopefully her injuries are not too severe and she will be on her feet soon. [No pun intended]

KARAOKE KORNER (Presidents Report)

2009 AGM. Those members heading down on Friday 20th March, We will be leaving Singleton Macca‟s at 8am sharp. See you there. Members are reminded that we are putting our bikes on display at the Albion Hotel on the 28th of March from 8:30a.m. for their annual post splitting competition. We need as many bikes as possible to participate to show support to the publican and staff for their ongoing support to the Ulysses Club. I know we had a show of hands at our last meeting of those who said they would attend, but we need more bikes to show up. So those who did not make it to the meeting on the 28th of February, please try and make it on the 28th of March. I have booked the disco upstairs at the Albion for our Xmas in July function that will take place after our meeting on the 4th of July. Put your thinking caps on and try to come up with a suitable theme for this function, more info to follow at the next few meetings. Donna has booked accommodation for our Christmas function, which this year will be held at „The Lookout Motor Inn‟ at Dorrigo phone 0266.572511. ‘Tell them you are with the Upper Hunter Ulysses Club’ The cost is $130.00 per person which includes accommodation, pre dinner nibbles, followed by a 3 course Christmas dinner. February 2009

KARAOKE KORNER (Presidents Report)
At our monthly meeting held Last Saturday night, nominations were called for members willing to take an active role on the committee for 2009. Suffice to say there was only one nomination for each position, therefore at the Branch A.G.M. on the 28th of February there will not be a need to hold a ballot to elect new committee members.

I would like to thank the outgoing committee for their efforts during ( Grumble Bum ) 2008. In particular our Secretary Graeme Lothringer, who for personal reasons decided not to seek re-election this year, Treasurer Kerry Solman, for being able to balance the books. Keith Smith who as usual does an excellent job with the ride calendar. Thanks to Wayne Smith for the newsletter editing, who keeps reminding us all that he is always seeking contributions and photos. Mark Walmsley who is rarely seen these days but his web site monitoring is first class, thank you for that. Thanks to Bear the archivist, who like Wayne needs more photos for the albums. Garry Knight, thank you for your welfare reports during the year and for introducing new members at our meetings. Lastly the three committee members Keith and Garry who I have mentioned and Max Cherrie for their input during the year.
Cheers SIMMO.

BIKERS FOR SIDS AND KIDS - Sunday 9th November
Registrations at the Newcastle foreshore will start at 8:30am for a 10:30am departure. You can make your own way there or even better meet at Singleton McDonalds for an 8:00am departure (or Muswellbrook McDonalds at 7:15am) Entry is $20 per bike for a really good cause. BLUE MOUNTAINS RIDE - 15th & 16th November as per the Ride Calendar NEWCASTLE TOY RUN - Sunday 7th December (the Ride Calendar states the 6th which unfortunately is optimistically wrong!) This is the 31st Toy Run. Bikes will start gathering at Sandgate at 8:30am for a 10:00am departure. As usual, the Upper Hunter Ulysses will leave Singleton McDonalds at 8:00am for the 1hr ride to Sandgate. More info on the Toy Run at www.toyrun.org.au XMAS PARTY - Saturday 6th December after the monthly meeting. It was decided at our meeting that there will not be a secret santa. Instead it was agreed that those attending will make a donation of $10.00 each, which will go to the Jane McGrath foundation. We will just have to make our own entertainment instead. The Christmas party will be a BBQ, upstairs in the new rooms. I will send out a list of those that have indicated that they will be attending so you can let me know if   (a)I have made a mistake; (b) can't count; (c) you would like to attend but haven't advised us yet; (d) you can't remember what you said!
    All the best Graeme

It’s Time for a Change. Over the Xmas holiday period have a think about whether you might like a position on our branch committee. At our first meeting for the new year [February] we will be calling for nominations for all positions, which will be voted in at our March meeting. An injection of new faces with new ideas, would be appreciated.

October 2008

At our October meeting it was discussed about what we should do for our Xmas party. The Xmas function will be held at the Albion Hotel in the upstairs nightclub and will commence after our monthly meeting on the 6th of December. We need to finish our party by 11:30 p.m. that night, so the disco can take over. Those that wish to party on after 11:30 p.m. are welcome to do so [just bring along your dancing shoes.] For catering purposes numbers attending need to be finalised at our November meeting. Sean [publican] will provide meats, salads etc. for a BBQ [which he will put upstairs for us] at a nominal cost per head. If you do not want to have a BBQ it needs to be discussed at the next meeting. Also, it was decided that we have a secret Santa on the night, this will only work if all those attending buy a gift to the value of $10.00 So women buy a gift for women and men buy a gift for men, it can be of a novelty theme, or can be whatever you decide to the value of $10.00. This should provide a bit of comic relief on the night.  Over the Xmas holiday period have a think about whether you might like a position on our branch committee.  At our first meeting for the new year [February] we will be calling on nominations for all positions, which will be voted in at our March meeting. An injection of new faces with new ideas, would be appreciated.  On order are four fluro vests 2 X green and 2 X orange to be worn by ride leader [green] and tail end charlie [orange.]  The vests will be handed out at our monthly meeting for the day ride the next day, and are to be returned to Cherrie's electronics [during business hours] as soon as possible after the ride. For mid month rides of two or more days, the vests are to be picked up from Cherrie's electronics during business hours, and returned to same after the ride, once again during business hours Monday to Friday. The vests will need to be signed for, so we have a record of who is in possession of these vests. The reason for four is there may be a splinter group on the two or more day rides who wish to go in a different direction, or wish to go for a spurt. This enables us to provide for that purpose.

SIMMO.

August 2008

Our first monthly meeting at the Albion Hotel was held on Saturday the 2nd of August, it was great to see so many members in attendance. A warm welcome was extended to four members from Newcastle/Lower Hunter, especially President Mick Yule, and Secretary/AGM Co-ordinator Chris Garrod. On completion of the meeting Chris gave a 2011 AGM update, they are anticipating over 7,000 registrations which would make it the most successful AGM on record. We have been volunteered to perform the task of registering arrivals at the AGM, this will require a decent commitment from members who are available to donate some time over the AGM week. As we get closer to the 2011 AGM we will be advised well in advance of what is required from our branch. On Saturday the 30th of August we are visiting the residents of Alroy Hostel, where they will be able to sit on and ask questions regarding our bikes etc. I am guessing that Darrel Watson and his new Oz trike will be a huge hit. We meet at Allan Bull reserve [cnr. Bridgman Rd and Acacia Crt] at 0945 for a 1000 start at Alroy. On completion we can continue on for lunch, at a venue to be determined on the day. Remember our next meeting is also at the Albion commencing at 6:00p.m. on the 6th of September, until then stay safe.

July 2008

At our meeting last night, it was decided by all present  that we hold our next two meetings [August and September] at the Albion Hotel. The reason for this is that we would have had to hold these meetings  in the breakfast room at the Agi, due to the back room being booked for functions. If these meetings prove to be successful, we will be looking at locating to the Albion on a permanent basis. Also Lyn, has asked me to let everybody know that those intending on going to the Albany AGM, that she has secured accommodation but she needs definite numbers by Wednesday this week, to secure that accommodation. Lyn is also organising accommodation for Penrith AGM as well.  You can e-mail Lyn at  lyncherrie@sctelco.net.au

Well another AGM over and done with, I can remember just over two months ago when we were all counting down the days until we departed for Townsville. How quickly that month away for me has passed, oh well only twelve months until Penrith. The ride up to Townsville went without a hitch, accommodation in Goondiwindi, Banana, and Mackay was fine. We then arrived at the infamous Coconut Glen caravan park in Townsville, the brochure did not do the park justice. It was certainly different to what we expected, from ants in the rooms, no hot water in some rooms, ensuites the size of toilets, and nowhere to hang any clothes. They were just the highlights, our room/cabin/cell, was right next to the local trucking depot, where at 5:00a.m. air starter motors were cranked up, trucks were left idling for ages, and as they left the yard the trains would start the clatter as they went past the caravan park. Thank goodness we only stayed there for 5 long nights. Kerry Solman and I went to the Friday meeting, where it was announced that Newcastle/Lower Hunter would hold the 2011 AGM. Their President and AGM Co-Ordinator will be attending one of our meetings shortly to outline their plans, and what assistance they would like from our branch. The parade went well on the Saturday, it was unfortunate for Max & Lyn, as we were about to leave for the parade muster point, Max received a phone call advising his mother had passed away. They decided to head home then and there, a special thank you to Neil and Janet for accompanying them home and making sure they arrived safely. The dinner on the Saturday night was a disorganised shambles, we had to line up for ages to get in, once there if you went to the Loo, you then had to join the main queue to get back in. Tempers became frayed and the volunteer doorman was panicking, as people were trying to gain access to their tables and not going back around to the main entrance, he was trying to call security over to evict paying members from the dinner, for trying to sneak in,too much overkill for mine. Sunday a few of us went for a ride to Charters Towers for lunch, I saw an advertising billboard that said "Relic book store and dozer hirer" they certainly have everything in the bush! Monday ourselves, John and Barbara, Bill and Joan left for Cairns, where we had a most relaxing few days. Bill and Joan Tindale have been given new nicknames, the reason being that Bill who rides a Honda Deauville, cam up with this analogy. Honda make the Goldwing, Silverwing, ST1300 is the chicken wing, and he rides the bantam wing. So with all the talk about chickens and feathers I have christened them Plucker [Bill} and mother plucker [Joan] with their approval. We had an uneventful trip home the pluckers left Cairns early, as did John and Barbara, we met J&B in Toowoomba and rode home together from there. I am sure that one of the crew who went on to Darwin, will submit a detailed report, as I have heard some of their escapades and they are well worth knowing about. SIMMO.

KARAOKE KORNER    (Presidents Report)

KOFM in conjunction with NBN channel 9 have been running an overbelly competition. Listeners were asked to send in a photo of their beer gut. First prize was return flights for two from Williamtown to Melbourne, two nights accommodation, and a limo at their disposal for sightseeing. The competition was judged by the results of an online poll, our member obtained over 80% of the overall vote. The winner was one of our very own members, who wishes to remain anonymous. To comply with his wishes no names will be mentioned, but the winning photo is seen below. Congratulations to the mystery winner. SIMMO.

April 2008

At out monthly meeting held on the 5th of April, It was great to see such a good roll up. Those of us that stayed for a meal, were treated to an entertainer who was in a word excellent. He was so good that some of the tables were cleared, and a dance floor was created. I spoke to John Price [publican] and mentioned how good Col, [entertainer], was and John is getting him back next month to perform on completion of our meeting. Addo thought Col was that good he purchased a 6 C.D. set for $50.00 As a show of support, it would be appreciated if those that are going to have a feed after the meeting eat at the Agi. Also those going to Townsville and are yet to pay for the accommodation in Goondiwindi, the cost is $47.50 per head, and money to Lyn Cherrie this week please. The July ride that I am organising to Wollongong and Picton, has now been put back to August, more details to follow after the AGM. SIMMO.

February 2008

Well our next meeting in March should be very interesting. It is our A.G.M. and hopefully we can attract some new members to put up their hand and stand for positions on the committee. I have been President for the past two years, and secretary for twelve months before that. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the helm, but it is time for a fresh face with fresh ideas. Please disregard the above statement due to the fact that at our Feb. monthly meeting I was nominated for the position of President, and will be proud to serve our branch for another twelve months. SIMMO. I would like to publicly thank our branch committee for their efforts over the past twelve months, particularly our Secretary Lyn, who over the past eight years has been the heart and soul of our branch, not only as a committee member but as the social director also. She has worked tirelessly for the benefit of our branch, and we all owe Lyn a huge debt of gratitude. Thank you to Janet for taking on the role of Treasurer, and hopefully she will continue in this position. Also to Robbie for his welfare reports not only on those members who suffered injury as a result of an accident, but also those who had been feeling ill or had an operation, Robbie was there enquiring as to our welfare. Thanks to Mark Walmsley for his ongoing efforts as our web site co-ordinator. We don’t get to see much of Mark as he lives out in woop woop, but his computer skills are second to none. A point to remember if you have taken any photos on club rides etc. e-mail them to Mark and he will put them on our web site, [see bottom of page four for web address] To Keith who has proven to be a ride calendar co-ordinator without parallel a huge thank you as well. The time and effort taken to prepare the ride calendar is most appreciated. Not to mention the out of pocket expenses that Keith incurs organising accommodation etc. Maybe we can all buy Keith a beer!!!! So try to make it to our A.G.M. on the 1st of March as your vote is important, and who knows you may even get elected!!! All positions have received nominations, and those nominated have accepted, so come along next month and meet your new committee. SIMMO. A brunch ride to Hamilton took place on the 20th [I think] of January, this was well patronised by about 20 members, partners and guests, who all agreed that we were on a winner with this early morning departure format. [See photo below] We even met up with Mick Yule [Newcastle/Lower Hunter President] and Chris [branch secretary] who even though they were late, still managed time for a brew with us. It was mentioned by George that we might look at having a twilight ride, to Newcastle foreshore, for pizza and then head home before it gets too dark. This idea is open to comment.

January 2008

Well Christmas has come and gone, and here we are full tilt into another year. Exciting times are ahead with one of the highlights being the Ulysses A.G.M. to be held in Townsville at the end of May early June. I hope you all have paid for your accommodation before the end of last year, otherwise you will have to pay the current 2008 rate.
Some interesting and exciting rides have taken place since the last meeting, Barry Gerry and I joined the Singleton Classic Motor Cycle Club for a day ride on the 6th of December. It was a short ride to Broke via Milbrodale, for a coffee stop the old timers and their older machines made their way home, while the rest of us went home via Wollombi, Cessnock and the vineyards. It started raining, so I kicked the turbo into gear left the rest to their own devices and headed for home. SIMMO.

On the 16th of December 7 bikes and 9 hungry travelers departed Singo Macca’s at 0730 for a ride to Beaumont St. Hamilton for brunch. We were shepherded into a café by a very resourceful waitress who gave us priority seating at the round table, and were looked after in fine fashion. The food was great, the company fantastic, Addo proposed to the café manager [a male] who knocked him back, a wise move, as for those who don’t know Addo picture Merv Hughes in a tutu!!! [Enough said] After brunch most of us decided to head home via the highway, Donna and Keith took the scenic route home via Dungog, Gresford, etc. The morning was such a success another one is planned for the 6th of January 2008, leaving Singo Macca’s at 0730, if you want a good feed and a laugh come along. SIMMO.
Wednesday the 19th of December saw the Hunter Coalfields Branch meet up with us in Singleton for a ride to Lake St. Clair for a sausage sizzle. Meeting time was set down for 0930, but by 1000 no one had shown up. At approx 1015 they started to arrive, and arrive, and arrive. Thirty one bikes pulled into Macca’s carpark, where they were greeted by four of us, we were slightly outnumbered. The reason for the delay was that one of their bikes fell over at Whittingham railway crossing, luckily no serious damage to rider, pillion, or bike was suffered, however the pillion was slightly shaken up. This is how organized this branch is, they even have their own ambulance, well a Goldwing with sidecar, in which the pillion was placed for the emergency dash to Macca’s for a coffee. On arrival at Lake St. Clair the sausages were duly cooked, coffee prepared, raffles drawn, [Gerry won a Santa hat] good company and good banter was the order of the day. Lofty told me that the reason so many turned up was that this was the last coffee club ride for the year, and they kick off again on the 9th of January. Simmo
Some of our members also attended their Xmas party on the 15th of December, a special thank you to those who went along, John Mcgee won a Ulysses leather hat in the raffle, and I won a Xmas cake. Gai was sober and as a result would not sing Chiller’s bend shame about that.
Simmo.

December 2007

We have recently received notification from NATCOM advising that all future branch AGM’s have to follow set guidelines. Basically this means that all positions nominated for, have to be in writing and handed to the branch secretary 28 days prior to the AGM. So at the February meeting nomination forms will be distributed, the AGM will be at our March meeting immediately after the monthly meeting. It is important that we receive nominations from members, as I will not be seeking re-election as branch president, nor as newsletter editor, and Lyn [who deservedly needs a break] will not be seeking re-election as branch secretary. It is time for new blood and new ideas.   Simmo.

October 2007

On Wednesday the 19th of September Jim & George met up with the Hunter Coalfields branch at Cessnock Macca’s and joined them for their Wednesday coffee ride. We were made to feel quite welcome by Lofty and the crew, and were amazed to see so many members show up for this mid week ride. Lofty mentioned that they quite regularly get 20 bikes or more for this ride. They are very organised with each rider required to sign on with their name and mobile number, this is in case someone gets lost. I think they have a role call at each checkpoint. The ride is quite leisurely and our members are welcome to join in. They meet at Cessnock Macca’s at 0830 for a 0900 or thereabouts start. We have also been invited to their Rock and Roll night on the 20th of October, check out their web site for details. SIMMO

Seven Bikes from our branch departed from Singleton and Branxton for a leisurely ride to Hexham Macca’s to meet up with the other branch members from Newcastle, Port Stephens, Cessnock, and Lake Macquarie, where greetings were exchanged before riding to Maitland Park for a memorial service for members who have ridden on. The weather whilst overcast was a lot kinder to us than last year, and the rain kept away which was fortunate. Representatives from each branch read out the names of members who have departed, the padre [Howard] made a speech and recited a prayer. On completion the majority of people in attendance [over 50 bikes] made their way to Broke for the Annual Village Fair. Thank you to our members who participated on this day and for offering their support to Donna and Bear. Simmo.

September 2007

For those going to Townsville for the 2008 AGM you are reminded that to secure your accommodation at 2006 prices in the Coconut Glen Van Village on 07-4774-5101 you need to pay in full by the 31/12/07.

G'day All,
A big thank you to all who participated today, it was a tremendous turnout from all the Newcastle/Hunter branches.  The service was well received and the bagpiper playing as we rode in was a nice touch.  While I was there I met some of the Hunter Coalfields members and they have extended an invitation to attend a night of Rock N Roll at East Cessnock Bowling Club on the 20th of October. This is the same weekend as the ride to Dubbo etc. so will only apply to those who are not going on the weekend ride. Tickets are limited to 300 only and are on sale at $20.00 each, the band playing is Gold Cadillac, so it should be a good night. Expressions of interest to me please, and for more info check out their website.   http://www.ulysses.org.au/branches/huntercoalfields/
If we get enough wanting to go we may look at hiring a mini-bus or similar.  Simmo.  Ph:  0265 732 536

AVOID THE SMACK
1. Don’t ride like an unimaginative twit early in the morning. Chances are, you’re as half asleep as the rest of ‘em
2. Keep your eyes peeled for running engines (steaming tail pipes etc). Running engines mean that the car is about to U-turn in front of you. A car full of writhing kids may mean that the door is about to swing wildly open in front of you. Give parked cars a wide berth at all times. Use full beam and your horn if you think it’s necessary, hand gestures cannot be heard
3. The first corner after a filling station usually has a film of diesel or petrol on it, and it’s especially bad when the road surface is damp. Be prepared for a sudden loss of grip. Also, trucks love to do U-turns out of filling stations.
4. Use all your peripheral vision on the approach to a zebra crossing. Is anyone running down the pavement? Are they running towards the crossing?
5. Move over a lane well in advance of busy motorway slip roads. Cover your brakes and keep a good distance from surrounding traffic.
6. Overtaking before a junction is a good way to die. Remember that large trucks and artics need both sides of the road to turn left.
7. Use yer nose. If there’s a smell of shite in the air, expect tractor trouble.
8. Bus drivers, in particular, observe strange rights of way rules. They’ll always pull out on you given a chance. Fire engines are driven by speed-crazy psychopaths and carry 400 gallons of water; don’t expect them to be able to stop in a hurry - they can’t.
9. Anywhere taxis and mini cabs hang around is dangerous. Taxi drivers are masters of the rapid U-turn and passengers will open doors on you.
10. The outside line on a roundabout is usually covered in debris and diesel. Take a tight line if possible.

July 2007

On Saturday the 30th of June approximately 15 bikes took part in the 100th birthday celebrations of Dangar Wing at Singleton Hospital. It was a pretty miserable day with cold winds and overcast conditions, the fact that we were down in the boondocks of the hospital grounds, was not very well received by our members. We were there for the public to have a look at our bikes, but hardly anyone made the trek down to our display which was unfortunate. The organising committee was hoping that people would have a look at our bikes and then participate in the men’s health checks on offer. Due to the location of where we were, I would say that the health checks were a dismal failure. Thank you to all of our members who volunteered their time it was appreciated. SIMMO.

Our monthly meeting held on the 30th of June was cancelled due to the fact that the Agi Hotel had a number of functions on, and also a band performing where we usually hold our meetings. This cancellation did not deter our members who were there to celebrate with Lyn on her reaching her 50th birthday. I am not sure how much of a surprise Lyn actually got but thanks to Max for putting on a good spread. Quite a few people joined in the spirit of the celebrations by wearing party masks, special tribute must be made to one man who on donning his mask turned into “Mystery Man.” Mystery man is similar to superman, once the mask is on he has super human strength and is able to accomplish any task with minimal effort, his pool playing skills should be seen to be believed. He wishes to remain anonymous, and will only use his powers in a positive way. If you should come across mystery man do not be afraid, approach him with caution, and let his positive aura embrace you with a warm fuzzy glow. Oh mystery man’s wife thinks he is a lunatic, but not me I have seen him perform, it is a sight to behold.
Could that be Mystery Man below holding his magic wand?????

2007 AGM

Well the 2007 AGM is now a distant but fond memory, all made it to Coffs Harbour without mishap.
The only trouble was a duck managed to fly into the path of a Royal Star Venture, and is now able to be served as Peking Duck, if you are prepared to ride to Ebor to have a taste. From all accounts the accommodation was adequate, and within walking distance to all the major attractions, namely pubs, clubs, and the AGM venue. Wednesday night was a night of great revelry, at the ex-services club, particularly if you follow Queensland, [go you good thing]. Thursday night was Karaoke night at the Coffs Hotel, and the Upper Hunter choir was the hit of the night with their rendition of ‘Hey Baby’. The ladies in the group were such a success that a local lass requested their back up vocals when she performed the popular hit Love Shack. This lady even took a particular shine to one of our lady members and even lifted her from the stage on completion of the song.  Friday was more merriment, heaps of money being spent at the various stalls and some of our more mature lady members visiting the local sex shop, to see what was on offer.
Stay tuned for photographic proof.

Snake seen wriggling in muddy ditch!!

On Easter Monday Snake [Dave Convery} decided to go for a leisurely cruise on his trusty steed, with his young neighbour from across the street and his brother. The route they took was through Wollombi etc. Near Laguna Snake was rounding a bend when his attention was diverted, and he ran into difficulty, namely a 1.5 metre drop into a culvert on the side of the road, [ his version is a car was turning into their driveway, my version is he was blinded by his beard flying up into his face] Dave’s two companions knew something was wrong when he didn’t come round the bend, so after waiting for a while they backtracked, and found his helmet sitting on a guide post. It was placed there by the lady who witnessed him falling off. She was standing on the side of the road waiting for assistance, because if she went to assist Dave they would not have been seen by any passers by. So Dave is lying in the ditch in agony, the lady standing by the road side waiting for someone else to show up, when a car pulls up and offers help. Another lady gets out of the car and mentions to the first lady that she is a nurse, so am I says number one, really says number two, where did you study. I studied in Newcastle says number one, wow I studied in Sydney says number two. I studied in the school of hard knocks says Dave how about some help. Number two goes down to help Dave who is lying in a bed of stinging nettles, she sits down next to him. Dave mentions what she is sitting in, and her reply is, it doesn’t matter my husband and I are on our way back to Sydney and we have been drinking beer and smoking pot all afternoon. The upshot is Dave suffered four broken ribs one broken collarbone and knee cap He is home on sick leave as is his bike, luckily he can still lift a stubby of beer to his mouth, but only when he takes his arm out of the sling. For a full version of how the accident happened, and if you want a good laugh, get Dave to tell you in detail what actually happened.

Robbie’s helmet, how lucky is he that he wasn’t wearing an open face!!!  His hands are progressing slowly and he is making a speedy recovery. He has had his skin graft and will be able to grip the handlebars on his new bike, without any difficulty. Ask Robbie what he has bought. He also has sold his trailer, and in future will be camping in Motel rooms with the rest of the uncivilised rabble. Robbie is now a firm advocate in the wearing of gloves.  I have been guilty of not wearing them in the past but no more!!

Hi All,
We had our first meeting of the year last Saturday and it was well attended again. We were also treated to a demonstration of some bike gear that would make our lives a bit easier when on our bikes. The gentleman was also kind enough to donate some of the equipment in a raffle held on the night. As Lyn mentions later in this Newsletter, our AGM will be at the next meeting on the 31st March at the Agricultrual Hotel and all positions will become vacant, including doing this Newsletter, I have done it long enough, time for some new blood. December  2006
Hi All
Another year is nearly over and there are no more listed rides till next February due to the Christmas Break and also the hot weather we have now for a while. We had our monthly meeting before our Christmas Party with some more discussion on our club shirts and patches as well. We decided on a design and price but buggered if I can remember it( must remember to write stuff down before getting stuck into the grog). If you need anymore information on these, please contact Lyn, I am sure she will provide all the answers for you. There was some more stuff talked about but its all a bit hazy to me, I must be getting old and forgetful. I know I should have written it down, BUT: I had no pen, it was dark, I did not have my glasses, I was drinking, ect ect ect Those that went to our Christmas Bash at George and Sandi’s had a great night, even though it rained quite heavily for the first part of the evening. Maybe we should have more functions there as the last one we had there it also poured quite well. The food was good and the company was even better. We had quite a good attendance but there also were a few that did not make it, we are sorry you missed such a great time. There were the usual raffle draw and Jim tried to tell us they were all in his name, but we were wise to that, he did though manage to be right once and did actually get one prize. A couple of novelty items bought great mirth to all present. A great big thank you to George and Sandi for hosting us again and all those that helped them in this task. Also another great big thanks for Lyn for all her effort and help. I would have put some photos in from our Christmas party but forgot to take my camera and no-one has sent me any. If I receive some before the next Newsletter goes out, I will put them in it. I don’t know what sort of representation we had at the Toy Run the next day, other than Bear who was I believe taking a Dignitary on the back with him. Perhaps someone can send me a report and photos of this ride? That’s all I can think of for now, probable forgot a heap of stuff I should have mentioned, no doubt I will be reminded ;<() Cheers Jenny + Oigy

Decembers Senior Moment. A new member had gone to the gents when we were out for tea at a club. He became a little frustrated when he could not figure out how to get water from the taps. Worse still he had to come out and ask another member to give him a little help. “Yeah mate just put your hands underneath, they work on a sensor”. A members partner had half drank a lemon lime and bitters before she realized that it wasn’t hers. Another members partner was seen scavenging through a McDonalds garbage bin, she had thrown in a crockery plate by mistake and was trying to retrieve it . Another member decided to “Mow” his water meter down, (What did it ever do to him?) this of course ensured a very wet and embarrassed member, let alone a very inconvenienced wife and neighbors for several hours to come.

November  2006
We had a good roll out at the last social night again, so good that they moved us into the big room out back like we used to have, much better all round. The committee is still investigating future venues for our Social Night/Meetings and will inform us as to the results. Out first batch of Club T Shirts have been ordered and Lyn is also going to see if some more patches can be made as we have run out. Congratulation and a big thank you to Polly and Sally on their wedding and the BBQ they provided recently, it was greatly enjoyed by all that attended (Some photos to put into this Newsletter would be nice, hint hint) Perry of Newcastle Motorcycle Wholesalers also gave a demonstration of some riding gear he is selling to Ulyssians at a good discount and a lot of interest was shown in his products by the members present. Congratulations to Mick Mantle on becoming a Grandfather That’s about all I can tell you all for now, till next we meet…….Cheers Jenny + Oigy

CHRISTMAS PARTY
Our Xmas party is at George and Sandi Robinson's house at 17 Orchard Ave. on Sat 2nd of December. Meeting is at 6:00p.m. Nibblies will be served during the meeting, the main meal will be served at 7:30p.m. approx, and there will be desert to follow later on. The cost is $20.00 per head, you are to take your own drinks and a chair, and money is to be in to Lyn by no later than the 24th of November. Raffle Tickets included with this newsletter also, they are $1 each, If they need more then they can collect them from Lyn at the shop or we can send them out. Xmas hamper donations to Lyn please by 24 November.

Novembers Senior Moment.  One member of our group is very conscious of the cleanliness of his teeth, because he can still proudly say that they are all his own. One particular day on his recent visit to Phillip Island he had little regard for his own teeth, because when he was cleaning them he had discovered he had put shaving cream on his brush. “”Phew Phew “”. Walking has become part of one of our members health program now. He has bought himself a treadmill. After about a half an hour of brisk walking he stepped straight off the treadmill, “whoops” A--- over head.” He said that he should have read the instructions first to know that you should slow down before stepping off. Playing peek-a-boo is not usually a habit of a member on a recent ride. Before leaving our accommodation it was pointed out that he had not zipped up a certain part of his clothing, which was a little embarrassing. A members son had a close call recently, he was driving the family ute, and suddenly a wheel came adrift and was following him along the road., Perhaps a senior moment for a certain member when he didn’t do the wheel nuts up properly.

October  2006

Hi All, Another full Newsletter for you all, please keep items coming in for all to share .Another good attendance at our meeting. Welcomed new member Gerry Winter and partner Andrea, and a prospective new member Terry Cousins. Re: Nambucca ride. Sat. riders as per ride calendar. Bulk club shirt orders will be going into the supplier appr. 20th Oct. All sizes and money to be Forwarded to Lyn by this date. Also what names to be on the shirts. Cost $34.50. Reminder: Please get your replies into Paul and Sally for their “ Post Wedding BBQ” to be held on 22nd Oct at 12noon . Please note. Wayne and Shireen are building a new home, and their temporary address for now is 29 Hassell Rd. Muswellbrook 2333 Ph.65412063. Mick Barrett is recovering from minor injuries after a bike accident in Vic. after he and Raylee returned from Tasmania. Mick was confronted with a log lorry on the wrong side on a hair pin corner. He put the bike down to hit the drive wheels so that he would not be hit by the jinker. The bike has only superficial damage. We wish him well Update on Ray Addison following his bike accident. He is recovering at home which most probably Will be around 8 weeks. We wish him well. Natcom has advised that we need to appoint a welfare officer. Robbie Merrick has taken on the new position. In the event of an accident or breakdown, or any Member that needs assistance from the club their first point of contact should be the welfare officer.
Cheers Jenny + Oigy

Octobers Senior Moment Last Saturday afternoon Mick Mantle sat down to watch the AFL grand final. He asked Beth what channel the footy was on, being female she didn't know. He turned the TV on to channel 7, no footy. He changed the channel to NBN no footy So Mick turned the TV on to the sports channel on Pay T.V. there as large as life was the grand final between the Swans and the West Coast Eagles. Mick watched intently as the lead changed many times, he was heard to be cheering the Swans at every opportunity. After almost three hours of nail biting action the final hooter sounded, and the Swans were home by 5 points. Now everybody knows that the Eagles in fact won by a solitary point. Mick had just watched a replay of the 2005 grand final. The 2006 grand final was on channel 10, the only free to air channel Mick did not check before turning over to pay T.V. DEFINITELY A SENIOR'S MOMENT!!!!!!!!

September 2006

The new Club Shirt was on show and further information as to the logo will be relayed by Lyn as it come to hand.
Cheers Jenny + Oigy

Hi Everyone,
As you may have read in past Ridding On's Tiger and Margaret Bath (she was Margaret Fell who was one of the founding members of the Upper Hunter) are riding around Australia to promote the awareness of Prostrate Cancer. They are also raising a lot of money on the way for more research into this. There will be a raffle on the night and the prize will be a lockable helmet bag. They will be in Singleton on Wednesday 27th September and would like us to promote this date around Singleton and Muswellbrook areas. This night is not just for Ulysses members. The meeting will be at the Agriculture Hotel at 6.30pm for a talk and Dinner. Please let as many people know about this as you can. I need to know numbers so can you let me know if you would be attending and how many others you have invited that may turn up. I think it is very important for our men to be aware of this and this will be a good way for all of us to learn more about this cancer. It can strike anyone and it has already happened to one member of our group and there has been a few scares, so I urge everyone to make an effort and attend this info evening. Regards Lyn Cherrie Secretary Upper Hunter Ulysses (m&l@hunterlink.net.au)

April 2006

Hi All, Our AGM was held on the 1st April, all new committee members are listed on the back of the newsletter. The Armidale ride has coincided with Easter, was not the intention when submitted last year. Some members may still be interested to do the ride.  Re. The Ride Calender. We need members to submit rides {whether it be 1 or 4 day rides } to Keith Smith our new ride co-ordinator.   At our September meeting 2005 it was decided by those in attendance that John McGee would be the point of contact for future rides. John volunteered his services for this role, so if you have advised John that you were going on a ride and then were unable to go please ring/email him and he will then inform others who ring on numbers going. This will only work if members use this service. It is more useful for those that live out of town.   In regard to our Xmas in July, we must have a minimum of 30 people. (See included Flyer for all the Details)   A date to note. June long weekend Fri 9th – Mon 12th Fraser Coast Odyssey. Info available Trojan website. Uncle [Robbie]

March 2006

Hi All, There was a good attendance at our March meeting. We welcomed two new members to the meeting. Ron Thomson , Jon Thomas, and one prospective member Bruce Saywell. Jim inquired about accommodation for the 2008 AGM at Townsville and they will be getting back to us on that. It was passed that we check out the Drovers camp for a Xmas in July night, Max to follow up,and Jock to follow up on the cost of bus transport. We will try and coincide Xmas in July with our July meeting. Everybody will be asked if they can give items for the hampers. There will be more discussion at our April meeting. Our AGM has been set down for the 1st April. All positions will become vacant ,so please give some thought about taking on these positions.
