Nothing like next year's trip to Perth to open up the
purse strings. It's new bikes for Russ McCauley
(GoldWing), Bob Carmody (GoldWing), Barry Rankin (Royal
Star), whilst the piece de resistance goes to Les
Sweeney. GTR1000 to Kwaka VN1500 to GoldWing within three
months.
It seems that the Royal Star is so powerful that it
pulled the trailer chassis from under the body, shearing
bolts in clouds of smoke (might be the bag of cement he
was towing had something to do with it)
Weekend runs to Majors Creek and Tilba Tilba reportedly
went well, and mid week runs were well attended despite
the cold weather.
This month's prize for accuracy goes to the seagull that
targeted Francis Mahlberg's little 250. Checked bomb
sights, zeroed in, allowed for wind shear, and scored a
direct hit from 1000 feet.
Des May, our one winged legend, has found many single
riding gloves over the years. Naturally, they've all been
port side gloves, which is about as much use to Des as
boobs are to a bull. The only previous right hand glove
Des found was claimed by its owner, but now he's found a
starboard one that fits and is still unclaimed. Trouble &
Strife and I take off for a quiet weekend at our cottage.
I open the door and head for the loo, whilst Linda
removes dust covers.
I'm quickly ordered out to deal with a visiting snake,
languidly siesta-ing beneath the dust cover on the dining
room table! Sending Strife to find a two metre long
'tamer', snake and I study each other intensely, until
Trouble returns and hands me a six inch cribbage board,
which causes lines of reptile merriment to appear on
snake's face, convulsions to ripple through its body, and
its ribs to rattle in xylophonic harmony.
My resolve to send beastie to chiropractic corner
dissipates, either from fear, common sense, or my
reassessment that snake is non venomous but more of the
man eating variety.
After
considering its throat diameter and my girth, the odds
swing heavily in my favour. This turns out to be in
snakes favour also, as I wrap it up in the table cloth
and chuck the lot off the balcony, hopefully never to be
seen again.
Three things have happened through this encounter.
I will never talk metric to Linda again!
We no longer have mice!
We look under the bed!
(PS see holiday home for rent in the classifieds).

South Coast
On the golf day in June, with only two clubs allowed,
most hackeys - sorry, golfers, opted for a 5 iron and
putter. Not that it made much difference to the majority
of the 22 starters. I mean, the average hackey can miss
the ball, dig up the fairway, hit over the fence into the
dam, and frighten the feathers off the local bird life
with any of the 14 clubs available to choose from.
Nevertheless, most of us played Disgracefully, while
there were a select few who managed to come to grips with
the 9 hole, 27 par course at picturesque Coolangatta
Historic Village near Nowra. There were 10 caddies,
onlookers, whims or whatever to cheer the contestants on
to a lower score, mostly to no avail. One thing was
certain, all 32 Ulysses members had a most enjoyable day
in beautiful weather.
Leonne Williams won the ladies event with a commendable
37, while Ian Jolly won the men's section with a
reasonable 42. Barry Williams won the best dressed award
for attempting to play golf in motorcycle leathers, while
Lorraine Jolly won the prize for just turning up.
Marion Akers picked up an award for walking the longest
distance, but as it was Marion's first attempt at golf,
an 80 wasn't too dismal.
Our South Coast Branch membership continues to grow with
around 100 Ulysses members attending our monthly
meetings. We have maintained our informal format since
forming the Branch on May 4th, 1985.
