Two Bays

Well, it's been some time since I've put pen to paper for Riding On, since that time the AGM for 1997 has come and gone and the June edition. I must admit all my questions were answered. Just proves that NatCom does listen to our gripes.

The Two Bays Group has grown to 45 members, with a large number of inactive members getting back on their bikes. A lot of our members ride smaller capacity machines and they have got off their bums to attend our rides with the larger capacity bikes. This does mean that they can slow the bigger bikes down somewhat, but our Group take that in their stride - and use less fuel anyway.

We have had our first 'incident' on a ride. Only a topple over in a U turn with nothing hurt, just some pride dented.

The rides have been well attended in the warmer months, but the cooler days have kept a lot indoors. If anybody can tell me how to get the members out in the cold, let me know. The ride destinations have been good. Some that come to mind are the Dandenongs (the land of Marr), Lakes Entrance and Swan Hill, Apollo Bay via the Greatest road in the deep south, The Great Ocean Road, and Kyneton. I hope the number of riders improve as the weather gets better.

Meetings are well attended at the Dromana RSL, with an average of 21 members attending on the first Monday of the month. The RSL is a very quiet venue and central to most members in the area that Two Bays covers. Meetings and rides are open to all Ulysses members so if you want a ride calendar just contact me via phone, email or snail mail, and I would be only too pleased to send you one.

We also meet at the Port Phillip Plaza Shopping Centre, Boneo Road, Rosebud, every Saturday morning between 10 and 12 noon, with a short ride afterwards. The Saturday after our monthly meeting a group go up to Elizabeth Street to chat with the Melbourne Branch or just dribble over the latest hardware on offer nearby. We are active on the peninsula and all are welcome.

Central highlands

There is no stopping the Highlanders. Even in Ballarat's cold winter we've had record attendances at our meetings and at our Saturday morning sessions at the Gumnut, our adopted cafe. Actually it's a risky business attending the Gumnut on a Saturday morning - you never know where you'll end up. It must be something they put in the coffee.

Ron and Leanne have bought new bikes, and Chloe and Kelvin have also upgraded. Everyone is sweating on 'the Rev' to see what he buys next. The Rev has done a brilliant job as our ride coordinator, organising the Poker Run, a sports picnic at Chris's farm, a tour of the wineries in the Avoca area (hic!), and many more. Each of those events was sponsored by one of our members, Greg Flood, of Hard On Kawasaki. We're really grateful, he's a great contributor.

Our sports day/gymkhana at Chris's was a huge success. Over 40 of us, including families, spent the night camping there out past Beaufort and having a great time. The kids were terrific, competing really well (too well, some of them) and giving us all a real run for our money.

Actually, they were all kids, some were just bigger and older than the others. George, once again, kindly lent us his PA system, only this time he wasn't there to keep everybody awake all night.

The next big event is the Australian GP weekend. Already it's shaping up to be bigger than, well, er, Eastern Creek. Paul, Gerry, Shane, Peter and Robin are taking the scenic route and camping on the island. Jim, Chris, Nick, Phil, The Rev, Ron and Mike are going to be sleazing out in some luxurious apartments near the island.

Happy and safe riding, and stay rubber side down.
