BRANCH NEWS & CALENDARS
(continued)

Glasshouse Mountains

For those fellow Ulyssians who don't know where or what the Glasshouse Mountains are, a little history of our area.

The mountains were named by Captain Cook on his voyage of discovery in 1770. When he first sighted them the sun was shining on them and they reminded him of the glass furnaces in his native Yorkshire, hence the name Glasshouse Mountains. Formed about 20 million years ago, their heights vary from 229 metres to 554 metres, there are 10 peaks in all. They are located about 60ks north of Brisbane, they can be seen from the freeway, but for best viewing the old highway is the go. Enough of local history.

You can't beat Queensland weather for bikeriding. Some discussion has been had as to whether to become a Branch or remain a Group, as our numbers keep growing No doubt in the future it will be discussed further and a vote taken.

Our Group goes from strength to strength, at our last monthly meeting we had 87 members in attendance. Our weekly social attracts an average of 60 members each Wednesday night. Almost all members ride their bikes to meetings and socials, and we have secure parking so that everyone can relax and enjoy the night.

The committee is always kept busy organising functions, raffles, regalia and rides. The functions and rides have been well attended. It's not uncommon for our Club to win the 'Most Number in Attendance' at the rallies around our area or interstate. Nine of our members are heading for Broken Hill in September for the Ghost Town Rally at Silverton. Watch out Broken Hill, we're coming again!! If the rally is as good as last year it will be well worth the long ride.

A few of our members went to the inaugural meeting of the new Gympie Group in July. Best of luck, Gympie, hope it all works out and you grow from strength to strength. To all new Groups, best of luck, our Club grows strong because our committee has a good motto, 'follow the rules laid down by NatCom and forget the bullshit at meetings'. You don't have to get bogged down by 'points of order' etc. at meetings, that only drags meetings on and people don't come back. Remember what the Ulysses Club is all about.

It's been decided not to put a run calendar in further Riding On editions as the forward planning never seems to work out. Anyone who is heading up this way and would like to know what we are doing can ring our run coordinator

Big Al on 07 5498 9480 and a copy of our calendar will be sent to you.

A warm welcome goes out to all our new members, the committee hope you enjoy your time with us and ask you to join and get involved. Any new ideas and suggestions are always welcome, remember a club is only as good as its members.

Finally, an invitation to any travelling Ulyssian, if you're in the area, pop in and say gidday. We meet at the Caboolture Aero Club each Wednesday night at 6.30pm. I feel sure if you need a bed for the night one can be arranged.

Until next issue, keep your bums on the seat, and safe riding.

Pioneer Valley

Hello again! It's now cane harvesting time in the valley, and that makes for real interesting riding, with cane bin haulers, cane trains, and cane trash on the road. Just adds to the fun in beautiful, downtown paradise.

By the time this is printed we will have been to the Retreat Rally., and the legendary hangovers etc. will be just campfire folklore. More on that next issue.

Our membership is steadily growing. In May we met up with the Emergency Riders Association for a BBQ and beer at Kinchant Dam. A good time was had by all. Maybe next time we might plan a bit and have wood for the BBQ readily accessible.

It's always encouraging when you go for a ride and meet bike minded people out for a ride and they want to join on the spot. I guess 'Old Fart' motorcycling is thriving. Bewdy Mate!

Well, that's all this time. Remember, if you find yourself in our valley and feel like a run through the cane fields and rain forests with the Rat Pack, just call.

Contact numbers are; Steve Thompson 079 566 659, or Ted Walters 079 543 499.
