PURCHASING OFFICER'S REPORT
During one of our 1997 NatCom meetings, the President suggested a safety riding vest. and after due consideration it was decided to proceed with the idea. We now have a garment which we think is a good thing.

Many members mightn’t think such a vest is necessary. After all, when we ride at night we have our lights on. Members might not want to cover their colourful leathers with something so mundane. However if you’re not in favour of safety vests you may be influenced by former Sydney Branch president, Peter Bradley. Peter was unfortunate enough to have been struck by a drunken driver at night. As a result, Peter has done a lot of work on safety vests and is directly responsible for the product we now have for our members.

Our safety vest is made from sturdy, woven nylon mesh. Wind will pass through it and it doesn’t retain heat, so it will be comfortable in warmer months. It’s black, with two white, 2” reflective stripes either side of a 2’ red one. The white stripes light up quite brightly when lights shine on them. The red stripe is not reflective but aids visibility during the day. The vest fits over a jacket, has adjustable side straps for fit and clips at the front. It can be left on a jacket once it’s fitted. There is a standard cloth Ulysses Club badge on the front. The vest will sell for $36 and there are only around 70 in captivity - more will be made if the interest is there. If being seen at night is a concern, these will do the job.

Peter Bradley kindly handed over all his information to the Club so we can offer members the benefit of his work, he no longer has any interest in this exercise. I for one thank him for firstly coming up with such a good design and secondly for being so generous of spirit with his thoughts for fellow members safety. In the very near future we’ll be offering a Club scarf for sale. We’ve been supplied a sample and it was very well received. It looks good and should be popular with members. They are styled and made in Italy and we’re just waiting for delivery. The price will be $20.

We will be doing a little house cleaning shortly regarding our prices. A few items that end up in odd cents will be rounded up to the nearest dollar. It will help with administration and we hope it doesn’t inconvenience members.

Ride safely,

Ken Taylor
